Tattoo aftercare

A well-cared-for tattoo heals faster and looks better for years. This is what I recommend. If I put a second-skin film on you, follow what I tell you in the studio.

01

First hours

Leave the film or bandage on as long as I tell you. Once it’s off, wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, and pat dry with clean paper towel.

02

Days 1–3

Wash twice a day and apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free healing cream. If it shines, it’s too much.

03

Days 4–14

It will peel and itch. That’s normal. Don’t scratch or pick at it. Switch to a fragrance-free moisturiser.

04

Up to 4 weeks

No pools, sea or direct sun. Loose clothes over the area. After that, sunscreen always.

Worth it

Fragrance-free gentle soap

Cleans without irritating. The basic pharmacy one is fine.

Fragrance-free healing cream

Only the first few days, in a very thin layer.

Fragrance-free moisturiser

From when it starts peeling until it’s healed.

SPF 50 sunscreen

Once healed. Sun is what fades a tattoo the most.

Skip it

Expensive aftercare kits

You’re paying for the packaging. The basics above do the same job.

Thick layers of petroleum jelly

They suffocate the skin and slow healing.

Creams with fragrance or alcohol

They irritate skin that’s still open.

Exfoliants

Not until it’s fully healed.
